The Healthy Moms, Healthy Babies (HMHB) program increases access to health and social supports for pregnant and postnatal (up to 6 months post partum) women who face challenging circumstances that put their health and the health/well-being of their infants at risk. Challenging circumstances include poverty, malnutrition, teen pregnancy, social and geographic isolation, recent arrival in Canada, substance use and family violence.  Our goal is to reduce the incidence of low birth weight infants and promote optimal parenting and infant growth. We strive to meet our clients’ needs through nutrition counseling, low cost group cooking (cooking circles), extensive public health nurse contact, parenting support, referrals to other community agencies/support, food coupons, fresh food boxes, prenatal vitamins (depending on donations), breastfeeding support, lifestyle skill development, social networking and support, crisis intervention, counseling and other related services. The project serves approximately 200 women/families per year in 8 major communities and surrounding areas in the Calgary Zone, including High River.  All participants are invited to attend our monthly Family Circles which are group sessions that bring women together to provide information, support and create social networks. Further, we facilitate monthly Cooking Circles that focus on nutritious meal planning, budgeting, grocery shopping and hands-on low cost healthy cooking. Please, contact our High River health unit at 403-652-5450 for more information
