CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

Rowan House Emergency Shelter is currently licensed to provide residential support for 6 women and children in total. As we only have 2 bedrooms, we are often full. If two families require shelter at the same time, we may have to turn women and children away and refer them to Shelters in other areas. Because we share the facility with Eagle House adolescent group home, we are unable to house women and children in high-risk situations. We are unable to accommodate women whose partner may follow her after she has fled, due to the risk it would pose to the other program. Women in high risk situations are transferred to other more secure shelters in the province. For the same reason, we do not take children over the age of 12 years.

Rowan House annually turns away more women and children than they are able to serve

A larger stand-alone facility in a more secure area will allow for this need to be met by Rowan House. The feasibility study conducted in 2006 demonstrated a need for a larger service in the Foothills area. In expanding the services offered through Rowan House, we feel it is important to establish a highly secure facility that is easily accessible for all women and children in need.

A parcel of land has been secured and plans are being developed that will provide the services needed. The location is ideal as there is access to transportation, schools, health resources, policing, employment and affordable housing. Discussions have begun with government officials to secure operational funding. A $3 million capital campaign will raise the funds required to build this new facility.
